My mistake, there'd be a whole production, for sure.

[He takes another sip of his coffee; for all Taako's stupid jokes, there is a reason for it. He's trying to make sure Loki feels at ease, like whatever's coming isn't a big deal.]

Spill the beans, pumpkin, it can't be that bad.

[ Loki huffs. Some of the tension seems to slip away, at least. ]

It is not. I got called to the portal. Apparently I am slated to make a trip.

[ He paces unconsciously. ]

A return trip. They made it clear that I will not be gone long and the portal will return me here. Promptly.

[Oh.

It's obvious from the look of surprise that Taako was absolutely not expecting anything like that, and that he's going to need a few seconds to go on a little emotional journey to figure out what it means. He shouldn't worry, if they've promised that Loki will return, but he can't help that curl of fear.]

You sure they're gonna bring you back?

[He has to ask.]

[ Loki nods, even if his face is smooth as glass. ]

They made that part very clear. It only lasts a week before I will be forcibly returned.

[It's not cool, but what can he do about it? Loki's obviously made his choice, he's here to warn Taako, not to ask for help making a decision.]

You, uh-- Be careful for me, will ya? I'm not gonna be there to watch your back.

[ His answering smile is faint and knowing. ]

Neither will Thor. But I'll manage. Should I get you a souvenir?

If you remember me while you're there, sure.

[It seems to work differently for different people. Bryn remembered her time away, but other people haven't. It's a crapshoot.

There's a moment where it's clear he wants to say something more but can't quite get it out, before he manages to swallow his reluctance.]

You know I love you, right, no matter what?

[He knows how much Loki worries, about things changing, and this could change a lot. But it won't change anything with Taako.]

[ His face goes through a myriad of minute expressions, flashing through too fast to truly get a glimpse. This was the second time Taako had said it and Loki knows it never gets easier over time, even repeatedly. No matter how much you mean it. Like a song, the strain of the melody leaves you aching, gone before you can commit it to memory, but the memory of it is so vast that it encompasses everything you are.

But his hands move to cup Taako's face tenderly as Loki presses a kiss to his forehead, much like Thor would do for him. ]

You are the greatest gift I have ever had.

[This is a familiar gesture, Loki has done it a few times now but it feels different depending on the moment. Taako hates letting people get under his skin because it's so much once they're there and he loses the ability to keep his emotions in check, the way he does now as he squeezes his eyes shut to fight back the threat of tears.]

If you don't come back I'm gonna get the Starblaster and spend the rest of my life universe hopping until I find you and kick your ass.

[It's not a very funny joke, but he doesn't know what else to say.]

[ Loki merely smiles, thumb ghosting over Taako's cheek. If he knows there are tears, he doesn't show it. There is a lot Loki does not say or show. Not everything needs to be said. Certainly not between himself and Taako. ]

That seems fair. I'll hold you to that.

[It would be too selfish to ask Loki to stay, so he doesn't, not even for a few moments because there are time limits on these sorts of things and Taako won't take this chance from Loki.

So he lets out a huff of breath and steps back, managing a smile.]

I'll see you soon, Loki.

[It's rare for Taako to use names instead of a term of endearment, but sometimes it's important.]

[ Gently, he moves his hands away, stepping back with a faint smile. ]
