[Thor is struck by that, for a moment. Something in him flickers eagerly, wanting to immerse himself in that reality and not the one Loki has presented him.
He scoffs, forcing himself to shrug it off as he straightens up and arches a brow.]
He's the one who doomed us all. [The word again lingers on the back of his tongue, but he bites it back. He doesn't need to be bitter, he only needs to state the facts plainly.]
Did he leave that part out? That he lead Thanos to us?
no subject
But there's another explanation and that draws a sigh.]
I'm gonna kick his fucking ass. And yours, you dipshit, don't tell me you actually bought that horseshit?
no subject
It's not so easy to accept that he could be lying to protect Thor, though it's plausible that he's hiding something much bigger than the things he's admitted to.]
Did he tell you about the Tesseract?
no subject
[Thor doesn't know that Loki died, which makes him glad that he decided to hold onto that piece of information. Because for all that he thinks Thor deserves to know, he won't undermine Loki in that way. Even if he's pissed right now.]
He told me about the Infinity Stones and what Thanos did with them, all sounds kinda familiar.
no subject
[Thor explains slowly, easily.]
When we made the choice to destroy Asgard, I sent Loki to the vaults. It was the last place he saw before Surtur set everything aflame.
[With that aside, he asks:]
Without the Tesseract, what value would we have to Thanos? We were a few hundred people on a stolen ship, floating through space, looking for refuge. We wouldn't be worth his time, not without something he wanted.
no subject
Or Thanos would've found you anyway cause you guys had that thing last and he wanted it real bad. Come on, my dude, you can't-- you know why he's doing this. He thinks it's better if you hate him instead of knowing the truth.
[Taako knows Loki well enough by now, especially after their conversation about all of this.]
no subject
It sounds like you know a lot more about it than I do- And what would I know? I've only known Loki, what? A thousand years or so and I still can't seem to figure out what the truth is.
[He's exasperated, and he doesn't mean to take it out on Taako, but it all falls out easily after the first snap. He shakes his head, drawing back again and rubbing his wrists, full of restless energy.]
If there's something you know that I don't.. [His voice softens and he trails off, but he meets Taako's eyes, searching his expression.]
no subject
Still, he relaxes when Thor softens.]
Guess, darling, I had to. What's so bad that he'd rather you think he betrayed you?
[Thor isn't stupid, he can guess.]
no subject
He repeats it in his mind a few times, and each time it gets fuzzier. His head is suddenly full of white noise, the silence between the two of them is deafening as he circles around to the right conclusion.
Thor isn't stupid. He can guess. He feels as if he pales, but what bubbles out of him is a laugh. Bright and amused, expression incredulous despite the revelation.]
No. [He says, firmly.] I know that's not true, because he promised me he wouldn't lie.
[He has a lot of conviction for someone who clearly doesn't believe himself.]
no subject
He's a piece of work, we both know that. He was trying to spare you which is fucking stupid, I told him you'd figure it out eventually.
[He'll feel guilty about this later, about leading Thor to the conclusion, but it's only sped things up. This was inevitable.]
no subject
The ringing in his ears is back, and suddenly the petty little game he'd been playing with Loki is completely irrelevant. As if it never happened. As if that's not why Taako is here in the first place.
Loki's story hadn't really added up, but Thor had been willing to accept it. This adds up, but Thor isn't so willing this time around. Loki has betrayed him a hundred times, and he was sure he'd betray him a hundred more, but he'd always be around to do it.
Thor swallows hard, when he looks back up at Taako his eyes are wet with tears. Never really the sort to shy away from feeling his emotions or grieving openly, he doesn't care if Taako sees him cry.]
I'd much prefer it if you were lying, Taako.
no subject
[Isn't that what Loki was trying to do anyway? Cover up the worst possible outcome with a lie that's only the tiniest bit less awful. Better that Loki is a traitor and alive than a good man and dead. But this isn't the sort of thing that Taako can condone, this sort of secret between siblings.
It's too close to what Lucretia did to him. Better to never have known Lup, than to know she's dead.]
I'm sorry.
no subject
[Thor says, brusquely. With the overbearing air of it’s not fine hanging over him. He has a hard time making his eyes meet Taako’s for the moment, the shock is making it hard for him to have a definitive reaction.]
I should prefer that he died a hero rather than living on as a coward and a traitor. [He says, as if he needs to tell himself that.] I don’t know that I do.
no subject
I get it, bubbale, I do. But I think-- uh, I think this way is better for him. As much as I fucking hate it.
[After everything that Loki's been through, falling back into those shitty habits would sunk him back into self-loathing a lot worse than death has.]
