I'm glad I was wrong about you.
[And then back in his actual voice:]
The point, bubbale, isn't that I'm the one good magic person, cause that idea is fucking laughable. [Because he's not. Taako isn't actively malicious, but he's not good.] It's that magic isn't one thing or another. You gotta get over whatever it was like in your reality, don't bring that shit to the table here, it's not fair on everyone else.
no subject
I know. That's why I'm here. I don't want to keep seeing it like that or assuming everyone that uses magic is like that.
[ Adding, ]
I also didn't say you were the "one good one". Just that you aren't like the people in my world.
[ Which is pretty damn good in her opinion. The less Hand around, the better. ]
no subject
You still made it about me, and usually I'm like, all for that shit cause everything should be about me but in this cause it's gotta be about magic in general.
[Still, it seems like even if she didn't word it the best, they're on the same sort of page.]
Why me? Why not Gramarye?
no subject
Baby steps? Pretty much.
[ And maybe... deep down she's a little afraid. But that's why she's here, trying to push herself out into uncharted territory. ]
Plus, it was your reputation I was shitting on.
[ For the lack of a better phrase. ]
no subject
[It makes sense enough to him, and it's not dissimilar to how he approached technology here, rather than go to some big organisation for information he talked one-on-one. Makes the whole thing a little less daunting.]
And I don't think my reputation is gonna be too damaged by one person talking smack about me, but - apology accepted, not that I really gave a shit. I'm not big on grudges.
[Sure, it spurred the nonsense with Loki, but that was in motion anyway and it was something fun, rather than done out of real annoyance.]
no subject
Thank you.
[ She takes a sip of her own cup before she asks, ]
Do you mind if I ask you some questions about your world?
[ Might as well start with that point of reference. ]
no subject
[They're similar worlds, but there are also differences, things that might not be important but could still come up.]
no subject
You've been to other planets before?
no subject
[nbd]
no subject
Oh.
[ She's honestly a bit flabbergasted by that response but at least manages to say. ]
I'm sorry. That... sounds terrible.
[ Also like a few science fiction movies she's probably seen and forgotten but she knows better than to say that. Especially when she can't even wrap her mind around Earth being destroyed. ]
I was thinking we could start with the world you were born on but if you'd rather not, I understand.
no subject
[Taako didn't have a lot of connection to the physical place; Lup is his home and always will be.]
But don't like-- don't worry about it, it's cool. I guess the big thing with it compared to Earth is that we got a fuckload of different races, elves, gnomes, dwarves, orcs, dragonborn, tieflings, et cetera. And there's the magic thing, but uh, you're familiar with it? Most of you thugs from Earth don't seem to have it.
no subject
Though the "thugs" remark has her snorting slightly. She shakes her head, ]
We have most of that in movies and books. Video games. People wish they were real - that that kind of magic was real - but no, they don't exist in our world in the same way. At least not the one I'm from.
[ Adding that last bit because oh god imagining other Earths is just... kind of headache-inducing if she tries to stay too focused on it. ]
The magic I know about is... ninja-based, I guess. More mystical arts and human sacrifices than elves and gnomes.
no subject
Human sacrifice is pretty fucked up, we don't uh, we don't really do that? I mean, evil people do it I guess, but there's not a lotta general magic that requires that shit, unless you're fucking around with demons or eldritch horrors or whatever.
no subject
I don't really know what they were fucking around with or even what they wanted... Just that would drain people dry and whatever else they were doing, it was going to tear the whole city apart in the process.
[ She reaches up to swipe a strand of hair behind her ear, her expression grave for a moment at the memory of it all but trying to shake it off and stay in the present. ]
Did you ever experience anything similar on the other planets you went to? That kind of magic or anything like where you were born?
no subject
[So he doesn't really know a lot about it.]
no subject
Brow creasing, ]
Wait, "killed"? As in "killed you dead"?
no subject
[It was a pretty unpleasant experience, but he says this all as if it's not a big issue.]
Our ship, it kind of, uh... it sort of saved a copy of us, the first time we left our planar system. Every year when we left whatever system we were in, it'd sorta refresh us back to that point. If we died, lost a limb, changed our hair, none of it mattered. We'd be good as new, just with an extra year of memories.
[The only thing that stuck was Lup and Barry turning themselves into liches, but that's way too complicated to explain.]
no subject
[ She says this all slowly, trying to make sure she had it right but then is leaning back in her chair, bringing both hands to rub at her forehead. She tries not to groan.
This is a Lot to take in. ]
no subject
[His money is on Istus having something to do with it, or the bond engine, but he decides not to bring gods into this just yet.]
But uh, yup. As long as at least one of us got the ship out of the planar system at the end of each year, we'd revive.
no subject
Is your ship here? Or did you just... get pulled here?
[ That's the best way she can describe it from her experience. ]
no subject
[This is a lie. Lup is super dead, just hella dead, but she's a lich so it's okay.]
no subject
And you trust the people that brought us here not to do anything?
no subject
They're just people, pumpkin, same as the rest of us. They're being genuine about not being able to control the portal and as a whole they've got no beef with us.
[He can't speak for every single person in a position of power, but overall they're not hiding anything and they have no ill intent. This he knows for sure.]
no subject
I've been doing some digging - or have been trying to - since they decided to make me an investigative reporter,
[ Something that always struck her as odd because they had to have known she would look. ]
and I haven't actually found anything incriminating. Nothing that really speaks of anything shady or a cover-up. The kind of shit I'm used to finding where I'm from. So, while I know you're not wrong, I still gotta ask: how do you know that?
[ Because for all she knew, they could just be that good at hiding things. But she's trying to be more open-minded here so... ]
no subject
I, uh, kind of called on the spirit of a witch and asked her a few questions? Before you ask, yeah I know she was telling the truth, the spell guarantees it. I did a little research into the portal, too, so I know they can't really control it.
