[ Poe had nothing to do with it. Karen just realized she should probably stop being butthurt miffed and actually do what an investigative reporter is supposed to do: research and look for answers.

So here she is. ]

There's a cafe near the open air market that's pretty nice. You know it?

[ She figures he might considering he's been here way longer than she has (judging all the network posts). ]

[ She huffs something like a laugh through her nose. Her pride is still bruised, yeah. But knowing what she does now, yeah. She deserves it. ]

[Taako tends to run early, most of the time, but today he's running about five minutes late, though whether it's on purpose or an accident will forever remain a mystery.

He doesn't actually know what Karen looks like, but since he knows he's pretty recognizable even when dressed relatively tamely, Taako simply orders himself a coffee at the counter and waits for someone to catch his attention.]

[ She recognizes him from what she's seen on the network and waves him over when he's looking around the place. She's settled on a pair of boots and jeans with her black coat untied but still on. Her blond hair pulled back in a ponytail but still holding an air of professionalism with how she sat at the table.

She was wanting to apologize but also had a proposal of sorts, as well. ]

[His first thought is that she's pretty - it makes sense, Poe's pretty too, they're a good little match - but while Taako is vain as shit when it comes to himself, he knows better than to judge a book by it's cover. He raises a hand in greeting in response to her wave, and when the barista hands him his coffee, he wanders on over and takes a seat.]

[Look, he might have a robot friend and use gifs, but he's still from a world that's mostly fantasy bullshit.]

[ She is a little take aback by that but gives a polite nod all the same, ]

[ She wets her lips in a nervous sort of way, having been thinking about the right way to go about this. In the end, it's best to just come out and say it. ]

I took your advice and looked through your previous posts on the network. And while I don't have to tell you 'you were right'... I'm glad I was wrong about you. In my world, magic is something people use to hurt others. Kill them, even. Nothing good really comes from it and I'm glad that isn't the case with you.

[ A small pause. ]

I'm sorry for the things I said and the assumptions I made about you.

[Well, it's something, but the best expression that Taako can muster up is bored.]

Not the worst effort, but it's kinda lacking. [He shrugs, takes a sip of his coffee.] Way too heavy on the justifications, and I think you've still uh, missed the point, but I guess you can't win 'em all.

[ She feels her jaw tighten some but she needs to hear him out. ]

[In a... weirdly good imitation of her accent and tone:]

I'm glad I was wrong about you.

[And then back in his actual voice:]

The point, bubbale, isn't that I'm the one good magic person, cause that idea is fucking laughable. [Because he's not. Taako isn't actively malicious, but he's not good.] It's that magic isn't one thing or another. You gotta get over whatever it was like in your reality, don't bring that shit to the table here, it's not fair on everyone else.

[ Definitely good enough to shock her, that's for sure. Her eyes widen and her mouth drops open a little. Shit. But she shakes herself out of it. ]

I know. That's why I'm here. I don't want to keep seeing it like that or assuming everyone that uses magic is like that.

I also didn't say you were the "one good one". Just that you aren't like the people in my world.

[ Which is pretty damn good in her opinion. The less Hand around, the better. ]

[He spent an entire year doing nothing but studying voice acting and mimicry, it's a skill.]

You still made it about me, and usually I'm like, all for that shit cause everything should be about me but in this cause it's gotta be about magic in general.

[Still, it seems like even if she didn't word it the best, they're on the same sort of page.]

[ There's a small, amused huff at that. ]

[ And maybe... deep down she's a little afraid. But that's why she's here, trying to push herself out into uncharted territory. ]

[It makes sense enough to him, and it's not dissimilar to how he approached technology here, rather than go to some big organisation for information he talked one-on-one. Makes the whole thing a little less daunting.]

And I don't think my reputation is gonna be too damaged by one person talking smack about me, but - apology accepted, not that I really gave a shit. I'm not big on grudges.

Do you mind if I ask you some questions about your world?

[ Might as well start with that point of reference. ]

Go for it, bubbale, but you're gonna have to specify if you want the planet I was born on or where I was living before all this shit.

[They're similar worlds, but there are also differences, things that might not be important but could still come up.]

You've been to other planets before?

A hundred of 'em, we kind of did this fucked up century journey running from a reality consuming entity. Our world is gone and our ship was pretty much destroyed, so we're gonna spend the rest of our lives on Toril.

[ She's honestly a bit flabbergasted by that response but at least manages to say. ]

I'm sorry. That... sounds terrible.

[ Also like a few science fiction movies she's probably seen and forgotten but she knows better than to say that. Especially when she can't even wrap her mind around Earth being destroyed. ]

I was thinking we could start with the world you were born on but if you'd rather not, I understand.

[Taako didn't have a lot of connection to the physical place; Lup is his home and always will be.]

But don't like-- don't worry about it, it's cool. I guess the big thing with it compared to Earth is that we got a fuckload of different races, elves, gnomes, dwarves, orcs, dragonborn, tieflings, et cetera. And there's the magic thing, but uh, you're familiar with it? Most of you thugs from Earth don't seem to have it.

[ She isn't sure whether to be impressed or worried by the response but then he's probably had plenty of time to accept something like that. On a deeper level, Karen hopes she can come to accept this place the same way if she ends up being stuck here.

Though the "thugs" remark has her snorting slightly. She shakes her head, ]

We have most of that in movies and books. Video games. People wish they were real - that that kind of magic was real - but no, they don't exist in our world in the same way. At least not the one I'm from.

[ Adding that last bit because oh god imagining other Earths is just... kind of headache-inducing if she tries to stay too focused on it. ]

The magic I know about is... ninja-based, I guess. More mystical arts and human sacrifices than elves and gnomes.

[He's fairly educated on the whole video games and movies thing, so that doesn't warrant much more than a nod of understanding. Humans are, if nothing else, imaginative.]

Human sacrifice is pretty fucked up, we don't uh, we don't really do that? I mean, evil people do it I guess, but there's not a lotta general magic that requires that shit, unless you're fucking around with demons or eldritch horrors or whatever.

[ She gives a small shake of her head, ]

I don't really know what they were fucking around with or even what they wanted... Just that would drain people dry and whatever else they were doing, it was going to tear the whole city apart in the process.

[ She reaches up to swipe a strand of hair behind her ear, her expression grave for a moment at the memory of it all but trying to shake it off and stay in the present. ]

Did you ever experience anything similar on the other planets you went to? That kind of magic or anything like where you were born?

A lotta realities were weird but they all kinda fit the same basics? There were e;even planes, including the plane of magic, so it was all pretty similar to the kinda shit we were used to. There was uh, one place I couldn't do any magic? But I dunno if that was the whole planet or just the... courtroom, I guess you'd call it? They killed us pretty quick on that one.

[So he doesn't really know a lot about it.]
